Took my Baby girl out the other night....Riley is my little hunter and she loves to do whatever Daddy does....She was a trooper, playing on the iPhone and drinking her treat of choice..Hot Chocolate from Dunkin!!! We had the heater going as it was probably the coldest day I have hunted this season. It was toasty warm in there with that lil buddy heater going. We ran out of gas just about the time the deer showed up but we still pulled it off....Even got the whole deal on video.

This makes a video for every one of my rugrats at age 4!!!

Headed to Kent County for another go at the ducks...
We had perfect wind but an awfully clear blue sky....
It didnt really matter because we were where the birds wanted to be.
Just a great time with friends!!!

We were pressed for time and the folks at Fords were cool enough to let us speed up the process and help with our ducks...They were super busy today...Paul had told us that he was a big ole plucker when he was younger....

Then came the tastiest part...I tried a recipe a friend sent me and it was the same thing I had tried from Bobby Flay in NYC at Bar America. Duck Sous Vide...
Well....Move over Bobby cuz I rocked that duck!!!

Some fun with my youngest in the ground blind...We did not see a deer...but we had a lot of fun exploring all my hunting stuff in my bag...She played on my iPhone most of the time...Very upset we didnt get a deer...She said "but I want to eat one"!!!

I ran into this group...It was kinda fun to watch...I first saw the 8 point as I rounded the fenced in garden. He was nibbling on some browse and it seemed odd to me that he was so exposed so early in the afternoon.

I kept looking around and found the true object of his desire....he followed and sniffed every step she took.

There was some competition though....in the form of a little half racked juvenile. He was not much of a threat...more like a wannabe that wished he could be in the position of his larger counterpart. He stayed out of the way for the most part until I lost sight of the whole gang.

It has been a loooong season...We still have a few guys with unfilled buck tags...but its time to start blazin some females. Paul and I were out the other morning and got the ball rolling...

Went to a spot that has been silly with does and had one certain girl in mind. She has been busting us here and at two other stands. She just seems to know every time... She is unmistakeable with the white spot on her face. Very same area I killed the big six last year. We have seen at least 5 deer this season with this crazy white spot but hers is the darkest and shaped a lot like an arrow head.

Well...true to form she hung up at 35 yards but that was no issue for Paul. She didnt make it out of the wood lot. We waited almost 3 more hours and Paul shot another mature doe before getting down and giving these deer to a friend that has not shot a deer this year.

I cannot thank Paul enough for videoing my buck earlier and I am basically devoting the rest of my season as his camera man...I know these does dont equal a buck but it was fun and we are on the right track for a late season buck!!! NEVER give up!!!

It has been a tough, tough season for me personally....I dont think I have ever had such a rough time even getting to the point where I felt comfortable that I could even see a good deer on stand. If not seeing big ones on trailcam was the only problem I dont think it would be so hard to deal with....but its the outside interference that has had me contemplating taking a vacation from the woods.

One step forward and two steps back could be used to describe my efforts this season. From pre season scouting til a week ago I have been on a roller coaster. I have been plagued on a couple of my properties by some "hunters" that think its ok to just go back in the parks behind my properties where no hunting is permitted or simply trespass where I have permission and they dont. I even had a guy trying to get permission on one of my properties shoot a deer from the driveway while waiting. Thanks for that buddy.....I wasnt going to kill that one yet as he was a dinker and more like a pet as he was on my trail cam daily.....

I am not one to let adversity keep me down. I keep plugging away and trying to get over the obstacles that are thrown my way. No sense crying....but man did I want too....Just couldnt win....

So my daughter Riley was sick on one of my vacation days....I was supposed to be in a tree this morning but Family comes first so I had to stay home....Frustrating but no biggee...at least I got to hang out with my rugrat....She loves to "Hunt " with Daddy so when she started bouncing off the walls...(not real sick.....hmmm) I asked if she wanted to go find deer... We drove to a couple of my spots and checked cams....Action was a little spotty as the rut was winding down....Just when I was feeling another bout of no buck depression coming on I saw him. A big buck that had a reputation in the area I hunted...He was in the front yard of a facility near a property I had recently yanked a stand out of.

I personally had never laid eyes on this guy but had heard stories about the crab claw 10 with a split G2... I pulled into a driveway and started shooting......my T2i.....at the deer getting some great shots of the big ole boy...He was king...His queen was laying against an ornamental bush and apparently close to "ready". other deer including some lesser bucks were mingling around the yard as well...but you could tell who was in charge...it was just a matter of time.

The crazy thing is I knew he almost had to have walked right by my tree that was empty that morning...I quickly retrieved a stand and put it back in the tree. Riley was on her best behavior waiting for the McDonalds reward I promised her for letting me get this done. (Father of the year award is in the mail i'm sure....hehe) I was now ready to hunt this guy and was just hoping that he would be in the area for more girls and this was not the only one.

A couple days later when the wind was right I was back in that tree with Paul. There had been heavy doe traffic on the cam and that seemed good. No good bucks or sightings of the King but I was not worried as I had never captured a pic of him on trailcam yet.

A gang of does were heading our way when we had a problem....The wind shifted....While watching them I felt wind on the back of my neck...It was kinda running down the side of the ridge we were situated on. I figured that if he was to come from that direction that we may never see him before he got a whiff....

Just about the time I thought our hunt was a bust....the whole gang looked up hill in front of us...we did the same and noticed a bunch of deer.

The entire herd on the hill came running down full speed as if they had just been bumped. It was a Saturday and there was a lot of activity in the surrounding neighborhood so this would be normal. At the very end of the pack was a big buck....Paul simply said..."its him" and I went numb!!!

Even though the whole group seemed to be running scared I noticed that my boy was hot on the tail of yet another potential mate...The guy gets around!!! I knew it would only take that doe coming into range to get a shot at him but the whole group continued out of sight and possibly out of my life....

A mere 15 minutes later while Paul and I were going over the chances that they would come back I caught movement in the direction they had gone...It was a doe......Followed by HIM!!!

and a couple young straggler bucks.

After what seemed like an eternity I ran a Rage through my best buck ever. She led the buck right past us and into my trap. The buck took off at the shot and stopped after 20 yards looking at the other bucks. He didnt know what happened and soon fell to the ground.

I was shocked at my own reaction upon watching the video. I dont believe I have ever acted like this after shooting a deer. I think it had a lot to do with the relief and pride of finally "winning" I had put a lot of effort in to this season and finally paid off....BIG TIME!!! Just shy of 147 inches!!!

Paul has yet again captured some ridiculous footage that I cannot wait to put together and now its his turn!!!!

Andy puts probably more hours on stand than anyoneI know. His favorite game is picking out a certain buck and hunting him. This season I have spent quite a few days behind the camera during this chess game and this guy is intense...It is nice to see him get the hook up on a suburban giant via his close friend Felipe. Felipe is known to year after year put down some giant Whitetails in Md. He, like the majority of the overkill crew focuses on suburban hotspots that harbor some enormous freaks. He shot a super giant about two weeks before taking Andy into one of these haunts....

Well, I'll try and make this as short as possible but theres allot to say and be thankful for. Anyone that hunts with me knows I normally am bringing people to my properties to hunt, but I was invited to hunt one of my buddies (Felipe who shot the 177" buck I posted pics of a week ago) spots which was a really nice change, thanks Felipe, one hunt I wont forget. I was just in Illinos hunting for 9 days with no shooters in shooting range, and Ive had 46 sits this year already. Our goal was to get kill footage for 2012 Overkill DVD and my hopes were high becuase Felipe has managed his properties over the years and its payed off big time. Felipe had several good bucks in this spot on his camera so with a little luck a shooter would show up. Felipe was manning the camera for the first time and did a fantastic job all the way around. We saw several bucks, some small bucks, some were in the 120" class, some I was ready to shoot but he called me off. We saw one nice 8 pt breed a Doe, was exciting from start to finish. At about 5PM all the deer moved on chasing Does etc and everything was quiet for 30 minutes. Felipe said a buck was coming, then he said thats your buck, it was coming from directly behind me and I couldnt see it until it was literally right under me and it was a no brainer. He passed right by the stand and moved out to about 40 yards and I couldnt shoot as Felipe was trying to get the camera back on him when he walked around our tree. I waited to see what he would do before trying a grunt, bleat or anything to try and get him to come back in, but he turned and walked back towards us, straight at us. He tortured me for a few minutes directly facing us with no shot and it only made it worse as I started to get JACKED up. Finally he turned slightly quartering away at 19 yards and started to move off, I gave a "bah" and stopped him long enough to take a shot. Felipe hangs his stands high, really high, like 30 to 32' so Im not used to shooting down at that severe angle. I hit him a little back, looked like liver/lung shot so we backed out and decided to go back in the morning. I knew he was dead but it was still a long night. Thanks Felipe, Jason, Todd and Todds son for the help tracking and dragging, was good experience for Todds son who recently started hunting and killed a few deer already. Unfortunately the foxes found him before we did and got a little of the hind quarter, but not bad. Troy/Bowtrolls son Dawson whos 13 took these pics and did a great job. Troy also took some pics and Im sure he will post some up later. This was the first time in 29 years of hunting Ive ever been invited to hunt a spot where big mature bucks were around and given the opprtunity to shoot one, Felipe, you are the man!!! The buck scored 145 6/8", had a 20 4/8 inside spread, split brows and cariied mass all the way out. I couldnt be happier or more greatful. You'll see the hunt on the 2012 Overkill DVD.

Well this youth day sika hunt has been a month in the works. As you all may recall, my son Tyler spent a week and a half at Children's Hospital for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Meningitis. I kept his progress up to date here on MWC and the outpouring of thoughts and prayers was overwhelming. Well, as a result of all the support, my son Tyler got an invite from Mark (aka Sikafreak) to hunt his Dorchester property on youth day for Sika. Needless to say, Tyler and I were speechless. Neither one of us had ever been Sika hunting and we were very excited. At the time of Marks generous offer Tyler was still at Children's in his hospital bed, and I can honestly admit it was the first smile we had seen on his face in days.

So Tyler and I went down Friday night and stayed at the Days Inn in Cambridge. We met Mark Saturday morning at the Royal farms store and began a friendship with a quick introduction and hand shake. We then followed Mark to his property where we met up with a few other MWC'ers who would also be hunting that morning with bows. We met Chip (aka Marshrabbit20), Kirk (aka Marshnut), and Sam (she is the daughter of the Huntress). Man what a great group of people and they were all very accommodating and excited for Tyler to get his first dose of Sika seduction. We all said good luck and Mark took us to the stand which was a tri-pod stand over looking the marsh. It was beautiful seeing the sun come up and the marsh come to life, oh yeah and all the duck hunters around us opening up their season with a bang. We were settled in and I will admit I had to climb down out of the stand and take of some business Royal Farms had left me. Once done I walked back over to the stand and Tyler whispered down not to move that he saw a stag. Tyler had the gun up looking through the scope and I thought I was going to miss it all. After a minute or two he said to come on up. I climbed up and asked what happened. He said it was a taller spike stag that popped up at about 50 yds walking away and he goes "Dad it just disappeared, I never had a shot". I chuckled and said that's why they call them "Marsh Ghosts". We sat there for another hour or so watching the scenery hoping for another sighting. We were sitting there talking when all of the sudden a brown shadow came bolting through the reed grass at about Mach 5. I told Tyler to get his gun up. This thing broke out into the marsh in the opening at full speed and I eventually just yelled at it to stop. Of course it stops right behind a bush. It stands there a few seconds and takes off again. I yell again and it stops again this time in an opening. Tyler was able to get the gun on him and that TC Venture 7mm08 barked. The stag stumbled and turned back to the reed grass running off with blood pouring out of the wound. Tyler had the biggest smile on his face and we were hi-fiving. I made the call to Mark that Tyler had gotten one and the calvary came. Mark had even called Oakcreek and his son Alex and they came to recover the stag also. Well the blood trail was quite impressive through that marsh. We found it with ease. Everyone was so pumped. I think that is the coolest thing about the kids being successful is everyone involved feels even better than if they had actually shot it themselves. We took a lot of pics and got the stag out of there.

Knowing Tyler could only shoot one Sika we were contemplating leaving for home. But, all that home talk subsided when Mark offered up his stand to me for the evening with my bow. I was all over that. Mark actually sat with Tyler for the evening hunt hoping for a whitetail encounter, which they actully had but couldn't get a shot. My evening in Mark's stand was awesome. I saw 2 small spike stags and a hind. They were at 10 yards for probably 30 minutes and I passed hoping for a nicer stag. They eventually walked off and that was it. Needless to say I am hooked. Mark said the invitation is open for January and man am I anxious to get back down there with that group of dedicated Sika hunters.

All in all a fantastic day. Thanks Mark for the invite and making us feel at home. You have a great group of people there. Tyler was tickled with his first Sika and you made his day a success. Tyler insisted on having it mounted so I dropped it off at Tim Young's last night. He wanted to have it mounted because now he will have his 1st whitetail, turkey, and sika mounted. I guess the best news of the whole story is Tyler has had several follow ups from his illness and is back to good health with no limitations. Thanks again guys.

For the third out of five seasons now I have videoed doug shooting his "best buck ever" out of the same spot within a few days of Halloween... Every time, doug looks up and says, "that's my best buck!!!". If we keep this up it will be a booner in a few years...

Here is Doug's take on the events...

This tree has really paid off for Troy and I over the past few years, and it's always within a few days of Halloween, and this year was no different. I worked at the firehouse on Halloween and was anxious to hook up with Troy knowing our favorite time to hunt this tree was now. We met up and headed in very optimistic about the evening, but after getting into the stand, it was so freaking warm we just weren't sure the bucks would be cruising like usual. The evening progressed and was an absolute riot on stand. We laughed and joked and got loud at times laughing so hard because we weren't really concerened with the woods being so dead. We even spent about 15 mins making a hellacious racket trying to lasso a limb I've been meaning to cut with Troy's pull rope and hook. We would never do well in the rodeo. But, we got it. Troy rattled several times throughout the evening but as the the 6 o'clock hour approached there just wasn't anything happening except for the typical yearling coming into check for handouts. So, Troy looks at me and says I think I need to rattle one more time, give it a few minutes, and then hit the road if nothing shows. So, he rattles, and Troy had no sooner put the horns on the hook and I hear him say good buck coming. I couldn't see the buck because it was coming from behind my stand, but Troy assured me it was a shooter so I grabbed my bow. I finally was able to glass the buck and agreed it was a shooter. As the buck approached, he was following a doe and had another doe following him. Well, he was closing the distance on a steady walk and the lead doe had already passd at about 5 yards. As the buck approaches at 15 yards I drew my bow and was preparing to stop him, when all of the sudden he just stopped, and unfortunately it was right behind a limb. So, I end up letting down. He took another step or two forward and the again the shooting lane had some trash in the way. As I stood there ready to draw, the doe bringing up the rear is now looking up at me and now I'm getting nervous as to what she may alret him to. Well, it felt like an eternity, but finally she turned her head and I was able to sit back down on the seat which allowed for a clear shot, a shot I didn't have standing up. So with the buck at 12 yards, I came to full draw, picked a spot, and squeezed my release off. (As a side note, a logistical mistake on my part, I had forgotten the camera boot for the camera arm so Troy was holding the video camera by hand, and since the buck came in behind us he and I were on opposite sides of the tree andTroy never saw me draw my bow, and when I shot, I scared the crap out of him and he jumped a little with the camera but no biggie). Well those Carbon Express luminated nocks sure are a beautiful color of red in that evening autumn woods. That arrow burried itself right on the mark and the buck spun around and ran back to where he had just came from. We watched him make a 60 yard dash and just crash to the ground. It was amazing. Troy turns the camera on me and we are high fiving and I give him my famous same line I give every year about this time and say, "that's my biggest buck". Man oh man I don't get tired of saying that. So, we made all the necessary Overkill phone calls we had to make and then climbed down. What a feeling walking up and seeing those beams sticking up. And, the body was remarkably enormous. It was a perfectly symetrical 10 pointer that we felt would be in the mid 130's. Well we were right. The next day at KS Kuts in Damascus we put a tape on him for a rough score and came up with 134" gross. We also weighed him there and he was 193 pounds field dressed, so we are guessing at least 230 pounds on the hoof. Wow. What a buck. And, this is the same tree my son Tyler shot his full velvet 10 out of opening night. I was on cloud 9. After everything that has happened recently I really needed something good like this to happen. My first P&Y and it is all on film. Thanks again Troy for being there with me and getting it done. I dropped my buck off today at Young's Wildlife and can't wait for Tim to bring him back to life like he does so well. Alright, I gotta get to bed. Off to be Bowtroll's camera Bi+ch again tomorrow. And thanks fellas for all the kind words thus far. I have hunted since I was 12 years old and was finally able to surpass that 125" mark. What a relief!

Kevins Giant Freak Buck

Last season left Kevin and I scratching our heads as the 145 plus inch 9 point we had been seeing seemed to be visible every day that we were not in the blind....right wind, right location, just no buck....It was like he knew. On the last day we hunted the set...A smaller buck paid the price and became a movie star. The big 9 was first spotted at the very end of October in a completely different area of the same neighborhood. Kevin and Chris were set up in a promissing spot where this guy had made a strong presence in September. He came to the edge of the woods and was about to enter the small meadow where the boys were perched and he just....decided otherwise.... The deer mad a small appearance in last seasons DVD
(He is in the intro where I was talking about suburban sprawl and the giants that come from the parks to the neighborhood yards) He was a clean 9 and we wanted to see Kevin put a tag on this guy bad. We had good trailcam photos as well, but as is the rule between all the boys...we really dont show the good ones until the deal is done...Its kinda like some bad JUJU or something...

We were dying to see what the deal was with this guy as the cameras went out this season. I got a ridiculously excited voicemail from Kevin one day and we had our answer....The ole boy had become a freak...We had noticed a wound on the deer in the last days of the season that looked to be from an arrow or bullet just above the sweet spot in the back...Could this be what caused the massive abnormality??? The rear facing trailcam photo told the tale. The crazy rack that now sported 4 beams still carried the same basic frame that he had the previous year.

The deer vanished as quickly as he had the previous season but we felt like we at least were on the right track because the location was the same. A quick look on the aerial told us where he was likely spending his evenings. A large beanfield to the south was the largest draw in the area. The sighting we had via trailcam were in the same small meadow where numerous bucks were frequenting a WYLD Mineral site. The differance for this season is that Roger and Kevin had moved the stand to just inside the wood line where the Buck had made his entrance last year. It was to only be hunted on a strong south wind.

When Kevin called and told me there was a south wind...I really didnt think to much of it as we had not seen this guy since the end of August. Our friend Paul, whom we had just asked to join us in our endeavors, was available to run the camera for Kevin this evening.
Paul was in the MWC @ Full Draw competition last season and Captured our Friend Rob Cardosi shooting a Monster Buck that scored just shy of the Boone and Crocket minimum. Paul was also just featured on Solo Hunter on the Sportsman Channel shooting a big freak of his own so I felt good knowing that if the giant happened to head into the meadow to feed, he would have no problem capturing footage of Kevin putting his signature heart shot on this deer.

I lost all track of time during the evening as I was busy signing papers on my new SUV and trying to make it to work on time. I had just turned the key on my brand new Rav 4 when the phone rang. I was sitting still in the dealership garage when Paul whispered...."I must be good luck behind the camera....the big freak is down" I about lost my mind!!! I wanted so badly to go see this thing...The evening was filled with stories and cell phone pics flying around like wild. Paul was convinced it was 170. I was not sure from the pics but I knew it was not to be topped in the unique category. Regardless, the big boy was in Kevins truck and is now the Overkill Poster Buck for 2011 Season 4.

The next morning I headed straight to Kevins house with my camera. As soon as I looked at this deer I knew he was as special as we had thought. The size of beams would be impressive as a normal 2 beamed buck but add in two more and you have a 4 beamed super freak with points to match!!! 15 scoreable points in all for a grand total of 166 6/8 gross inches. Unofficially this guy nets out at 157 non typical inches. Knowing what I know about Kevin....He will probably shoot a higher scoring deer one day....but this deer will always be tops in the crazy category!!!

And about that signature heart shot....After grabbing some 20 plus minutes of Big Buck rutting behavior, Paul followed the buck as he headed into the danger zone....20 yards in front left of Kevin!!! Kevin is perhaps the most meticulous stand setup guys I have ever seen. I always refer to kevins perch as his throne...He learned the art from Jeff and has taken it to extremes with his latest sets...I dont believe I have ever seen him have to move to shoot a deer....They walk right down and give it to him off of his left front every time!!! I was not surprised when Paul sent the picture of the beasts heart with a Slick Trick X in the dead center of it!!! I have honestly never seen anyone do this on such a regular basis...

Congrats Kevin on an Awesome and incredibly Unique Trophy. It looks like you may have the best buck on the DVD 2 years running....You hunted this guy smart and you deserve it!!!

So it has been antlerless time in the Overkill woodz
I have been making my rounds trying to video as well as laying down a few slicks my self...

The other day Kevin and I went to "The Doctors" for the first hunt of the year...
He informed me there was no pull up rope and to bring one which I did....
After tugging his gear up it was my turn to climb up so I was throwing a my rope up to Kevin....

That has never cost me a gash and a black eye before....

I was throwing and I guess the motion caused my binos which are on my safety belt to bounce up and hit me in the eye.....I thought this was just a fluke and since the rope didnt make it up to Kevin....I threw it harder!!!!

And it hit me harder.....Seriously staggered me like I just took a knockout punch...My bino cups were glued into position by me and it broke the seal....

We killed a couple anyway.....hehe....once I stopped the bleeding

My second angle cam was dead so I used my iPhone...
It worked awesome...I held it on Kevin with my left hand and propped it up on a tree for my deer that Kevin filmed!!! ahhhhTechnology!!!

Anyway...Im back in bucktags!!!

Bobbie came up from Baltimore or wherever the heck he lives on the other side of the earth...We were on a mission...and that mission was to shoot antlerless critters......multiple if possible....but with the current moon phase we would settle for what ever we could and be happy...My main man D-Man was running top cam and Bobbie and I would swap cams on the arm depending on who was shooting...A little dinker appeared....Bobbie opted out....but as I needed to fill a couple tags to put me back in the antler game I wasnt backing down....

We ended up with 3 camera angles...which is always a bonus...Dawson is one awesome camera guy...I mean the kid just turned 13 and he operated the T2I better than I did last season...Bob ran the main camera and got some really good close up impact footage...Dawson had a med/wide view including my bow limb right over my shoulder...and the GoPro had Bobbie and I plus the deer...(wasnt expecting that???)

I love technology!!! I am sitting in a tree with kevin this evening... During the downtime I have checked FB, the weather, a topo map, and Mwc. But so far We have only seen one little dinker four point... If the big boy follows the path he took it's going to be easy... Listening to Harry homeowner next door mow his grass has got me feeling a little less excited about this evenings outcome so my mind is wandering... I was taking pics for the blog of kev and I when I noticed just how burly my beard really is!!! I mean seriously... This thing is a work of art... It to me symbolizes the rugged outdoorsman I am... Hehe.... That sounds so funny to say while I sit in a backyard near d.c listening to traffic and lawnmowers... Anyway... I know the wifey is getting sick of the gargantuan amount of facial hair on my face so I figured I would leave it up to friends on the www to choose the outcome!!! Doug (Leatherhead) and I doubled on the second day of the season...
We shot 2 bucks...from a ground blind...in the hood....in under 4 hours!!!

But here is the best part...

We have 4 camera angles...

1 main camera
2 inside the blind cam
3 go pro cam mounted to the bow on the shooter

and 4...the best one of all...

I dug a trench to the other side of the yard the week before the hurricane.
I ran a cable to control my remote control at a greater distance. I then mounted a camera inside a tree at the opposite end of the yard where I had been running my trail cameras...

The deer were already feeding heavy under a giant white oak in the yard and with a little help from the highly addictive Lethal Weapon...I was hoping to position the deer between cameras...It worked!!!

I actually ended up getting blood sprayed on the remote cam as my buck almost crashed into it after the shot!!!

Doug and I could not stop watching the video last night!!! Over and Over!!! It is unreal...The deer running at the cam sounds like a stampede of horses and he is squirting all the way and kicking up grass and dirt!!!

Well the question of the day is not if Lethal Weapon works or not....Its how quickly do I have to leave before the deer show up...
and the even bigger question is should I shoot this guy...Right now he is "Plan B" Plan A is not cooperating but is still in the area...I have not had to use any attractant here because of the big oaks in the yard dropping a steady barrage of acorns to the turf. Scouting Trash Removal

Since I am going to try and remove trash every time I go....I will post a pic every time I can remember to do so. Trash is not the most fun thing to take a pic of so we shall see. In any case, This is a bag I picked up in about 1 minute in one of my hood spots as I was checking a cam by the road. It really takes no time. I chucked it in my trash can when I arrived home.

Found some bucks out galavanting around today while checking cams in the rain.

I was dodging rain showers leftover from Tropical Storm Lee today and I ran into a few deer in the same vacant lot where "Shaft" was the other day. I didn't really see anything huge but I did manage a few nice pics from truck. The biggest of the bucks is close to shedding and I may go back tomorrow and try finding him again to document the progress.

I guess if I had to pick a name for this guy it would be "Shaft"

Cuz he only has like a shaft of a point on one side and you kinda get shafted if you shoot him....

This Buck first made an appearance on film 3 seasons ago when I shot a different buck with my bow during gun season at the Germans.

We had him on trailcam a few times as well...He was a goofball with a beam and small brow on one side and a normal antler on the other.

We have seen him every year since but never have had a shot at him. (Not that anyone would have wanted too) hehe

This year though might be different...Still not a great scoring deer but at 5 years old and a little bit more gnarly he may not get a pass if we see him.

I was driving in to check cams and saw him in an abandoned lot about a half mile from my stand with a few other bucks... Thought he was kind of neat looking...He is now a 6X2

I was running around the lake near my house the other day. (Im trying to get my self in shape....trying) I was running down the home stretch near the spot where all the kids jump in the lake from the esplinade and I caught something floating in the water out of the corner of my eye...WTF....It was a brand new bottle...some jackass had thrown it in the lake. Here I am running by and my water bottle was empty. Maybe I should just throw mine in the water too??? Maybe we all should and then it will be a big floating trash can....I still had a mile to go but I carried mine home....This is not the first time I have seen trash in the lake. One of the last times I was down there bow fishing I took some home in my carp bucket. Sorry I just had to vent!!!

We cleared some lanes and hung a new set. It looks pretty killer. Now if we can just get some critters to cooperate and walk into the trap.

Doesn't it upset you? Getting all geared up to hunt and heading to your favorite spot only to see evidence that someone before you has trashed the parking area with bottles, wrappers, napkins, etc. I have forever been disgusted and ashamed by the actions of some of my fellow sportsman. There are some instances that stick out in my mind. I grew up hunting on Maryland's eastern shore. My Grandfather owned some pretty big properties that we hunted deer on. He also leased some of the properties to waterfowlers. I can remember numerous times rolling up to hunt and finding empty shell boxes, soda cans, and candy bar wrappers. It infuriated me...Not only because this was our land but because.........This Planet is "Our Land"!!!

This brings me to some of the other times I have been appalled at the sight of litter... I was in Sedona Arizona hiking a while back and was blown away by the amount of litter I came across as I traversed some of the most breathtaking scenery I have been fortunate enough to see. As I looked around I saw lots of notes and pictures stuffed in bags and tucked in the rocks. I know this place has special meaning and power for some so I kind of understood this, but besides all of these things there were tons of water bottles and wrappers from beef jerky and granola bars. I put as many items as I could in my pockets and walked them out myself. It wasn't that much of an inconvenience. This really doesn't have anything to do with sportsman but it brings me to some other multi use public places where we as hunters end up looking like a bunch of losers from the mess left behind.

Trash at the Seneca Creek parking area this morning.

I remember when Seneca Creek opened up to bowhunting a few years back. The battle was fought to get hunters in to this heavily over browsed park to control the deer. It was a tough enough battle to win over the public enough to get us in there so do we really need to have a bunch of slobs leaving litter at the parking areas? I remember pulling in there for the first time to scout being greeted with piles of garbage and it wasn't even actually hunting season yet. Was this all from hunters? Maybe not... but it did not take much effort to throw some of it in the bed of my truck to throw out the next time I got gas.

After taking a few pics of the trash I picked it up and put it in a bucket to take home to the trash can.

I guess what pushed me over the edge was the amount of trash I found while hiking some public parks this past spring looking for Morel Mushrooms. I mean...I would get into a little patch where I could tell other mushroom hunters had been and it wasn't only from their leaf scrapings or stems of shrooms left behind. It was the large amount of beer cans and soda/water bottles that these folks carried all the way in but could not carry out...even though they are carrying bags of mushrooms out....

I hear stories every season about guys losing prime hunting spots for one reason or another. Bad public image is one that could cost us some of the great public hunting we have right now and it definitely wont help us get any new doors opened. If the property you are hunting is private...wouldn't the Landowner be happy to know that the guy or group that he is letting use his property was taking it upon themselves to not only remove their own trash but others as well. It may be something that could save you down the rd. If someone else causes an issue for the landowner that he/she knows that it could not be his responsible permitee because that does not fit your profile.

In recent seasons I have become increasingly more involved in hunting in suburban areas. Homeowners are more likely to see trash left behind in their yards than say a busy Farmer would in the woods surrounding his fields.

I am going to make an effort to remove trash every time I go in the woods this season starting with the next time I head out scouting. I mean how hard is it to carry a small empty bag in with me in my backpack or pocket. In the suburban areas that I frequent it is shocking how much waste I see in the woods and parking area. It will not be that big of an ordeal for me to pick up a few items after a morning hunt as I walk to the truck. I know it does not sound like much but figuring that I will probably spend around 50 or 60 days in the woods this season it will add up. Just think...1 bottle a day will fill up a giant hefty bag by the end of the season. I am going to ask all my Overkill boys to join me in this effort. We always try to stay in good graces with our Landowners and have a great relationship as it is so this can only solidify our place on their land for the future.

Imagine running into a landowner and having them ask "what's in the bag"?
I can promise they will feel like they made the right decision in letting you hunt their property.

I challenge every one of my fellow sportsman to take the time to take out the trash on your next hunt. It's a small step but a step in the right direction to giving hunters a cleaner image.

So I was checking out some posts on Facebook the other day and I saw that my Niece had started a blog and was asking for comments. I love reading blogs so I clicked on the link to check it out. I read the whole first post and was in the middle of agreeing with the content when I saw a logo on the picture she had attached from peta.....

Her writing was about not leaving your pets behind during an emergency. I agree that if you have taken on the responsibility of becoming a pet owner that you are then responsible for the health and safety of the animal as you are any family member. Leaving them behind and in harms way is a pretty crappy move. The content of the posting was not what I had an issue with. It was the peta poster. I hoped that this was an oversight and that she had attached the picture because of the cute little puppy dog that is the center of focus.

I am not one to make waves and argue with people just for the sake of arguing but when the topic is one that I feel strongly about I will argue until I am blue in the face. The problem is, most supporters of animal rights groups and anti hunting organizations cannot be swayed because they are brainwashed by false statements and lies.

I then noticed that my Sister in law was agreeing and I was like dayuuum I hope they are not following the dark side so I replied....

Here is my point....This is perfectly innocent...but that is the problem. While I hate to give the crazies at peta or the hsus any credit they are good at trickery...

I mean when do you think of the Humane Society as bad??? You dont right??? and you shouldnt because they do a great service for animals in your local area.

Now add "of the United States" to the end of the Humane Society and we have a totally different animal. No pun intended.

You have to admit that its a pretty good way to get their ridiculously skewed message out to the masses as celeb gossip is probably more looked at by young and or impressionable people in the US than the daily news. Hiding behind the cutesy little furballs they put on adds and naked celebs telling you not to wear fur when truth be told....they would rather see a human die than get the medicine they need because it was tested on a rat. Give me a break....Puppies and Kittens....peta is responsible for killing more puppies and kittens every year than you could possibly imagine.

Had a crazy time this weekend. The Buckwild guys did everything they could to keep the show going despite Irene's other plans for us all. We still had fun despite the weather and it was good to see some familiar faces as well as some new!!! Turnout was spotty as would be expected as people were scrambling to get things in order for the storm as well as cleaning up after. Charles County seemed to have a bead drawn on it for the bands of rain to focus on. I did not get much sleep after the power went out at the Best Western as my little one crawled in between Mommy and I. I personally love a good storm so I didn't mind listening with the windows open...Anyway thanks to all for coming out to the show and supporting us, and I want to give a big shout out to the crew for turning out in force to help with everything.

When Dawson, Andy, and I were scouting the other evening Dawson pointed out a Praying Mantis and I snapped a pic of it with him looking at it. I think all the cool stuff we see in the woods while hunting is one of the best parts of the outdoor experience...You just never know what you will find next. I remember sitting in the same spot with Andy Last season and all we had in the corn with us was a pile of ladybugs and stinkbugs...The craziest part is...the buck we videoed that trip was a decent 3 year old 8 that was our target on this evening since he is now a stout 4 year old 10 point. Of course he did not show...but a new 3 year old did....go figure.

Went to Cumberland today!!! Walked the hills of the famous Hillbilly Shoot and shot a fun beatdown round of 3D. We shot a round of 25 targets with 2 shots per. All I can say is its a good thing Carbon Express is on speed dial!!! I can speak for Roger and I and say that we each left with one useable arrow. Not because we missed....but from the carnage around every turn... I have never had so much fun watching my equipment get destroyed. Dawson was along to document the destruction with the camera and I gotta tell ya...The kid is gettin really good behind the lens. Here are a few of his pics from the day and one of mine...The only ones I took are of the dragonfly on the Target with Hinky and Jeff walking behind.

The Buckwild Expo in Boonesboro was the debut for the 2 new whitetail mounts that Tim Young did for Kevin and I. We were both asked what we wanted in our mount and we both had the same answer….Surprise us!!!
I have plenty of typical deer heads in my mancave so I have been trying to add some more unique pieces.
Tim has done some pretty dramatic pieces in the past. I think the different types of material he has used pretty much covers them all. Each time I set foot in his shop I seem to find at least one unique display that I either missed the previous time or is awaiting pick up from another satisfied customer. From a frozen icy pedestal base to corn stalks made of bronze, Tim can design a little something for everyone’s taste. While all of the pieces may not be what you are looking for, He is able to work with you to find exactly what to do with your mount to fit your taste and style.
After a few chats about what I like in a mount, I have not looked back. I basically let Tim know my price limit, and whether or not I want a wall or floor pedestal mount and let the artist give me what he thinks the animal deserves. I could just as easy get your typical everyday whitetail mount but why? There is such a variety of options to dress up an average mount.
The latest deer I was having mounted was an old freak buck that the Overkill gang has had some crazy history with. The deer had a crazy attitude and was very visible to us for about the last three years. He was an oddball, having two completely different antlers. So weird in fact that if you were to have found them while shed hunting and had not known the deer…No chance you would have guessed them being from the same critter.
I wanted something special done but had no clue what. In fact, being in between trophy rooms right now I wasn’t even sure where he was going to be hanging out. I basically left the deer at the shop and said have at it….
Tim Knew that I needed the deer back before the show in Boonesboro as we were releasing the dvd and wanted the critters for the display. Young’s Wildlife would be in the same room as us so Tim said he could deliver them to the show. I was already excited about seeing my buck again but even more so after the phone call I received. Tim called and asked…”Do you trust me?” I of course said yes….He said…” Are you sure you trust me?” I laughed and said absolutely…He then proceeded to tell me that my freak was going to be mounted as such….freaky!!! I have never been dissatisfied so I was real excited to see what the outcome would be!!!
I saw some unfinished pics of the two pieces on MarylandWhitetail.com and although unfinished they looked better than some taxidermy I had seen in my day. Kevin’s was given a little attitude with a slanted head that differs from a normal form while mine had the strangest look. I had already been told that mine was going to have a background habitat added that would incorporate the look of the deer so it looked kinda funny to folks as they responded. Some said it looked like it was having a stroke while others asked if it was missing an eye??? I didn’t flinch. I could see what was about to happen.

The big day arrived and we were greeted at the show with two of the coolest mounts. The added flare of a background habitat worked so well against the barn wood. Kevin’s beautiful 146” 9 point was showed some head bobbing attitude while my Freak Buck was on the other side rubbing his eye and ear on a stick that was coming out of the habitat. I was told Tim searched for hours to find the perfect stick for the job and I can see why. The curve is stiff enough to let you see what is happening. The deer looks like a cat when you scratch under the chin or behind the ear. Its eye is closed and its ear is down and the ole boy looks like he is enjoying the branch that he found. It is easy to see why their slogan is “Everything but the heartbeat” as the feeling of movement is given to a mount like this.

The two pieces were a hit at the show and it works out quite nice to be able to send folks over to Young’s booth for more of Tim’s work and he can also send folks over to see an extension of his booth in ours. I recommend Young’s to do a mount to everyone I know. You may want a typical mount and that is no problem for Tim but its nice to know that the sky is the limit and you can get a one of a kind piece of art for your trophy room at the same place.

Here is my 2011 Elite Pulse
I picked it up at Jefferson Archery and had Jeff come with me and give it the JLH treatment.
So after having only shot it a few times, here are my thoughts...

The look.... Ninja... Really sleek black look, fantastic lines and awesome machine work which is always the case with any Elite I have owned. Topped off with a set of Maryland Flag Gold strings and red G5 meta peep, the bow is a real looker.

The feel.... Smooth, Steady, and at the same time aggressive. Pulling the string back with ease, I forget that I have the bow set at 64 pounds. The draw cycle of this thing is the best I have had on any "speed bow".

The sound....

The performance.... Smokin'!!! at the shot you realize you just unleashed fury but you don't feel it. I was surprised to get the kind of speeds I was getting because to date any bow I could achieve these numbers with would remind me at the shot.

The set up.... I equipped the bow with a B-Stinger stabilizer.... Minimal weight on the end...the bow just points.

Then I added a Sword Site and one of Jeff's own P.O.S suppressors.

Here are the specs...27" draw. (Which feels 100% comfortable even though I have been shooting just over 26" for years)

Is giving me a blazing 300 fps!!! (Ok well the chrony at Jeff's said 298/299 but the one at Jefferson said 302.........once) So Im going with 300!!! Hey its a big deal for a stumpy armed guy like my self to get that kind of speed with that light a draw weight.

To say I am a fan of this new bow would be an understatement...I am a little sad though to see the GT500 I have loved so much be put on the bench. I am giving her a new set of strings and dedicating her to a life of 3D.

The best part of the set up that we are shooting on these bows is that I can jump right off of the 3D course and into the woods with nothing more than a swap of arrow points!!!

Been checking the cams....I am again crazy impressed with my new Covert Cams...These little guys have been pluggin along for well over a month now and the battery life is right on 2 bars and has not moved!!! They continue to take fantastic pictures...I just wish my bucks would show up....I know what should be around but they have not shown in the typical spots...Most of the boys have a good one lined up and thats awesome with me!!! I will man the cameras!!!

In any case...I have had these cams in a variety of locations and the deer have been hammering the spots that I have been using WYLD Minerals!!! I have had the most success with the Orchard Blend and Sweet Addiction.

I am always looking for them...even whens its green. Its just a little dinker fork but it helps to have such a cute little model to show it off. I let her "find" it. She is always wanting to go hunt for stuff. When we first arrived here at the spot to replenish some WYLD minerals, we had a doe in the yard. Dawson and I hung back and rolled tape as Kevin and Riley walked closer, and closer, and closer....They got within 10 yards of this ole girl as she fed. If they always acted like this it would be easy. Riley was so excited to get close to her favorite "momma deer"!!! I think the picture speaks for itself as to how excited she was when she found the shed!!!

We had a fantastic time at the 1st of many Western Md. Buckwild Expos. The Buckwild Gang always puts on a fantastic event so we knew we were in for a great time.

There was a minor weather issue on Saturday but nothing that we couldnt handle. The kids made the best of it and played in the puddles while everyone stayed put and chatted through the heaviest downpours.

The Turnout was about as good as I expected for a first time show in a new location...I see this getting bigger and better as the word spreads.

The kids had tons to do and there was plenty to eat. Everyone was captivated buy the Giant Brown Bear. That poor dude looked hot with all that fur.

We were absolutely thrilled with the way the joint UltimateCamo/Team Overkill booth turned out with its new barnwood spruce up.

Jeff manned the charcoal grill the entire time and was filling the whole area with the smell of Chesapeake Bay Brats. The things sell themselves but it doesnt hurt to add a little cuteness in the form of a sample girl.

Nice to see everyone up there including the Jefferson Archery Gang and Youngs Wildlife. There were so many kids running around our booths that they kept each other busy and out of our hair....kinda...hehe

Even had a little time to try out the new bows on the 3D Range....

I ask for feedback constantly and this year is no exception!!!
Please give us feedback on the movie whether it be good or bad...

I have mostly had good comments but some folks have not been thrilled with the music...especially the first year. We cannot please everyone but we just want to show how much fun we have every season...

This season as well as last I switched up and started using some awesome beats from The Passion Hi Fi and have been totaly impressed with this guy!!! Unbelievable music and it fits our style with the Urban Flare!!!

I am always looking to get better at the editing thing as well so I need to know what y'all think are strengths and weaknesses....

I guess besides the music the only other complaint we have really had was that we shoot some small bucks.....Well.................
I wish they could all be 150 plus monsters but the fact of the matter is we dont do this for a living and we are trying to make a vid so if a buck walks in front of us and wants to be a star he will be....A lot of the places we hunt are in need of severe deer management and we get asked by landowners to shoot them...The Landowners dont care what size or shape the deer are...They just want them thinned out....
We run the risk of losing a property if we pass on deer so it is a juggling act to try and shoot big bucks while thinning the herd!!!

Anyway....with the DVD being out now for a few days I have already recieved some very nice emails so here are a few I will share!!!

I cannot wait to see the finished product on these two critters!!! These deer are featured stars on TOK season 3 "Community Service" Kevins big ole 9 point and my 5 year old freak!!! Tim asked what I wanted done with mine and I once again told him to have at it and surprise me... He only told me that the finished product will have a piece of habitat behind the wall pedestal form and I can only imagine what it will be from looking at the unfinished work!!!

One look at kevins buck and you can see that it too is not an average form...I believe that this is the type of thing that will keep me going back to Youngs Wildlife for years to come... I am a big fan of knowing that there is not another mount out there like the one hanging on my wall...Tim will work with you on any idea you may have but I prefer to let the Artist work!!!

Rogers Elite Pure

Roger began sending me picture of his groups in what seemed like minutes of him telling me he had picked it up...After a few days of this I got a review of this sweet shooter via email!!!

I decided on the Pure over the Hunter due to the Axle to Axle length. I am 6' 2" and weigh a biscuit shy of NFL offensive lineman. The Hunter felt like a toy in my hands while the Pure felt more like my Tour (Elites Target Bow), well balanced, smooth drawing and holds like a rock.

I purchased the 30.5" 70 pound Ninja. Fellow Team Overkill Member Chris Johnson had the 30" Pure. His felt short to him while mine felt long so we swapped out the draw elements. After some timing , draw weight and holding weight (draw stop) checks and adjustments I was ready to go.

I like having a 65% to 70% holding weight over the factory set 80%. Using a back tension release or even a thumb release used with proper back tension form, having the extra holding weight helps in your holding and release. Normally I shoot a 29.5" but with the 30" draw element adjusted down to 70% letoff it holds the same as a 29.5"

Now set with Hinky Strings, QAD Ultra Rest HDX (love these rests), 10.25" 11 ounce B-Stinger Stabilizer and my last year Sword 3rd Axis sight I was ready to start sighting in. I set the rest at the normal 7/8" up off the shelf and the 13/16" over for centershot. One shot through paper let me know I was on.

I shot one shot at 10 yards to make sure the sight was close then stepped back to 20 yards and shot 3 shoots (camera phone photo attached). All three were low left of center but touching. Great start. Easy to make sight adjustments when you can group like this. A slight adjustment was made to the whole pin housing then I stepped back to 40 yards (my middle pin) and shot one. Very close to center but still slightly low left, let's go back to 60 yards. At 60 yards I shot 2 shots, both touching just slightly low left (camera phone photo attached). Another slight adjustment and back down to 20 yards and shot again - dead nuts on. Nine total shots and I had the bow sighted in out to 60 yards - how easy is that!

Next was the true test - broadheads - this is not a target bow - this is a hunting bow. I use 50 yards as my check (normally the max I would attempt to shoot at a deer, so if I am good here I should be better even closer). I shot 2 field points then 2 broadheads. The broadheads hit slightly right of the field points. I adjusted the rest slightly out (just a fraction), shot again and we were hitting in the same spot. Locked it down and have been practicing solid ever since. From my 2010 GT500 to the 2011 Pure I did not have to make any adjustments in the pin gaps. I am getting the same speed from the Pure as I was with my GT 500 hunting bow. The only difference I feel is the Pure has a smoother draw all the way to a solid back wall. The GT 500 had just the slightest bump, not bad but now with the Pure it is completely gone.

I am not a Speed Demon, I would rather have a bow that is easy to draw, holds great and does not feel like it is jumping out of my hand at the shot. The Pure has all of that. At 70 pounds and 30" draw I can easily hold this bow at a 45 degree downward angle and come to full draw with no problems. With the Pure I can focus completely on the shot and not the draw cycle.

My arrow setup is a 29" Carbon Express (CX) Maxima Hunter 350 with 3 Bohning Blazer Vanes, CX Bulldog Collar, CX Lazer Eye Nock and 100 grain Rage 2 Blade Broadheads. Total arrow weight is 400 grains. With shooting 290 fps I am obtaining 74.72 foot pounds of energy. More than enough for any whitetail around.

I loved the GT 500 last year (so much so I had two - one is still setup for 3D - the other has been setup by Jeff Harrison with Cuda Cams, Hinky Strings and 50 pound Ultimate Camo dipped limbs for my wife) but I think I have a new lover for the fall 2011. Still in the Elite family, just with the younger hotter sister of the GT 500. My wife is going to be a hunting widow again this year. As long as I can keep the nerves in check I should be easily filling freezers again this fall.

It's time to hit the hunting shows so we needed to do a little spruce up on the booth... It was only a hair over a hundred degrees the last 3 days so why not right??? Pheeeeew!!!!

Jeff is a real carpenter so he uses a level. I am not really sure what that does... Hehe. I just us my internal level...I mean come on... It's barnwood!!!

Look closely and you will see skin on the drill bit... That is from my finger... Slipped off a screw and punctured my finger up to the end of the screw head... Felt AWESOME!!! It's par for the course for me though... No hospital visit this time...

This may very well be the coolest looking hunting bow I have ever seen. We all love to rock the all black ninja look of the Elite Bows. However, Andy is the owner of Ultimate Camo so it is fitting that he would want his dipped in his own design. That is just what he did. Andy sent his bow to Nostalgia Works... (www.nostalgiaworksmd.com) where we have had lots of things dipped in the past. Andy and Jeff came up with an idea to leave the inlays of the bow black as well as the under side of the limbs. What came back is truly a work of art. This ridiculous creation deserves a cool set of strings so Hinky made a variation on the original Maryland strings. Here are pics of a bow that looks as good as it shoots!!!

Jeff's Review of the new 2011 Elite Hunter

Working on bows and shooting at Jeff's house always a fun time. In one of our most recent practice sessions Jeff could not stop raving about his Hunter. Now this was not supposed to be the set up for this season. Jeff is shooting the Hunter that I had ordered and I am shooting his Pulse. I was loving what I was hearing about the Hunter so that is what I ordered. I had heard it compared to the GT500 and that is absolutely the best shooting bow I have had in years. To me it was a no brainer that I would love shooting the Hunter as well. Well as normally happens, Jeff gets my bow to set up. ( Why would I set it up when I can get one of JLH's Supertunes!!!) He was diggin' it. He told me it was holding like a rock and was super forgiving. That all sounded good to me but after hearing the speed report which while its not hateful....(In fact it is faster than almost any bow I have owned with my stubby arms at 280fps with a 340 gr. arrow) I was craving a little more speed.

He loved it so much he suggested a straight up trade for the Pulse!

I was game so the swap began...It really didn't take to much work as we both shoot about the same equipment. We just had to get Hinky to make us new strings in our size and colors of choice......again.....He was pretty salty let me tell ya....and we were in business!!! He shoots this thing well and is constatly raving so I asked him to write me a review. What follows is Jeff's Review of the 2011 Elite Hunter. I will be posting a review of Rogers Pure followed by my Pulse!!!

Review of the Hunter
I’ll start off with cosmetics….fit and finish are perfect, after all, it’s an Elite…I wouldn’t expect anything less from them.
I purchased a 70# ninja Hunter at 27”
After I got my Hinky strings put on, everything fell right into spec. 31 ¾ ATA and 7 ½” BH and maxed at 71.7#
Setting centershot and nock height are second nature to me…simple 7/8” off the shelf and 13/16” centershot.
For nock height…. with the bow level, I set the arrow “just” out of level, with the bubble just touching the back line (nock high)
I will usually run about 10 to 15 shots through it to set the strings, then time the cams….once that’s done, it’s off to sight it in.
3 shots at 25 yds and I had that pin set, then checked 45 yds…left and right were spot on, so I proceeded to set the pin gaps…after about 20 shots, this bow is ready for the woods.
I’m shooting Carbon Express Blue Streaks 250’s with 100 grain points…total arrow weight is 332 gr.
I know the Hunter isn’t a speed demon, but it is spitting arrows nicely down range.
Overall, the Hunter is a ridiculously smooth bow. It holds like a rock (feels like a much longer ATA bow) it is plenty forgiving, and easily the quietest Elite I’ve owned….and quickly becoming my favorite.

After setting up my new bow last night at Jefferson Archery, Jeff and I headed over to Youngs Wildlife for a SCI meeting where tim was going to demonstrate how to properly care for big game when traveling. While the seminar was taking place I could not help but venture out in to the show room which really is like something out of National Geographic. I have been there quite a few times but I always find something new and cool to look at!!!

New Covert Review

I have been so dissatisfied with my trail cams in the past. Now, to the other cams credit....I have never been one to spend a ton of money on what are supposed to be the best working models out there. I hear far to many horror stories on the forums of cams being stolen and the fact that where we do most of our hunting is in the suburbs has kept me from spending the coin on the top of the line models. I have always been impressed with the success folks have reported using Covert brand cams so when I saw a more affordable model I was ready to jump! I talked to Chip at Jefferson about the CA3.0 model and although he had never used one told me he could get them at a great price...I sold a few of my older ones and was in business so I ordered 3. Chip had them in no time and I hit the woods.

My first impression was that thing was tiny!!! I figured that would be fantastic to hide in the urban environment to protect from theft. The main reason that I was interested on this camera other than the small price tag was that it only uses 4 AA batteries!!! The cams I had been running before used anywhere from 4 to 6 D or C batteries and that puts a hurtin' on the wallet real quick!

I was a little freaked out at first by the little ipod looking remote that it comes with. Each cam has one and it is required to set the cam up. I didn't like the idea of that at first as I have a tendency to forget or lose parts that I may need on a daily basis. However, once the cam is initially set up you don't need to use it again unless you would like to use the viewing feature (which is a tiny window, and that is not how I like to view anyway) or to check battery life. As of writing this I have had the cams for about 4 weeks and have checked them each 2 times. I still have over half the battery still remaining on the status meter.

I set the cams up in different type areas to see what kind of quality I would get from each environment. I put one in a yard that is very bright. This is the same yard that I missed a big buck in on the upcoming DVD so I was hoping to see that guy but no luck yet....Most of the pics from this cam were great during the day and in the evening and dark.

I put another cam in a very dark poplar and scrub tree grove looking over a WYLD Mineral site. The pics from here were ok however a lot of the dusk and dawn pics were hard to see. Its like the cam didn't know wether to go infrared or not. I believe this is an typical problem with trail cams so I am not to bummed...

The third I set up on another WYLD Mineral site. This is definitely my best WYLD site as it is getting hammered at all times of the day. The place looks like an elk wallow. (you cant see it in the pics because I have the cam sitting low on the ground as this is a heavily traveled cut through for neighborhood kids during the summer. The vegetation is thick but the spot is pretty open during the day making it a middle ground between the other two locations for my test. I got great pics of deer on the cams at all hours of the day. Unfortunately for me I don't see any of the big bucks that are in the area. Lots of doe and fawns so I guess it could be a great spot during the rut again as it was last season.

All in all I am super pleased with my decision to get these cams and I am looking forward to seeing how far the batteries will go. I will have to report back on that. As of right now I think I may get a couple more of these if I can swing it before the season starts!!!

We are really excited to be launching our 3rd DVD on August 1st!!! I think all in all we have a better story line and the editing is cleaner. We have a couple dozen archery deer kills and a look in to where we hunt as well as how we go about it!!!

Had a great time fishing on the Captain Ike II out of Indian River Marina with Captain David Collins....We had to get on the boat at 2AM with a report of an early bite with a quick drop off of activity...We were on the fishing grounds before the sun came up and had a Mahi in the boat in no time...The fish were spotty but we did manage a few before 9 when it just shut off....It was kinda nice to be back early to continue my vacation with the family anyway....The big fish of the day was a 60 plus pound Yellowfin that almost everyone in the boat had a hand in reeling inas it made its way around the boat. I was in the nest the whole time runnin cam for that one!!!

Bob took his kids Jennifer and Sam and hit a local pond. The fishing was slow until Bob's natural inbred redneck instinct took over and he started catching little bluegills. A hook through the tail and big bobber was all it took. 16 Bass later from 1-3 pounds made out for a great day of fishing. Good times
